Education
Attorney Cavanaugh graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts. He earned his BA from Boston College. Attorney Cavanaugh earned his law degree at Suffolk University Law School, magna cum laude, graduating in the top 10% of his class. He was a published member of the Suffolk University Law Review and received numerous awards for oral argument and legal research and writing.

Attorney Joseph F. Cavanaugh III focuses his Cape Cod law practice on civil litigation in the trial courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He has extensive experience in the field of insurance defense, and has represented numerous insurance carriers that conduct business in Massachusetts, including: Arbella Mutual Insurance Company; Amica Mutual Insurance Company; Encompass Insurance Company; Quincy Mutual Insurance Company; USAA and Safety Insurance Company. Attorney Cavanaugh has defended these companies' insureds on hundreds of occasions in the areas of motor vehicle accidents, construction negligence, commercial and residential property and hazardous waste claims, including mold and oil spills. Moreover, Attorney Cavanaugh has defended insurance companies on matters concerning, M.G.L., Chapter 93A (Consumer Protection Act), M.G.L., Chapter 176D (Unfair Insurance Settlement Practices), Personal Injury Protection Benefits and Breach of Contract claims. Furthermore, Attorney Cavanaugh has provided these insurance companies with coverage opinions, and have sought declaratory judgments concerning complex coverage issues.
Attorney Cavanaugh possesses extensive litigation experience in the trial courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including complex litigation involving a large volume of evidence, numerous trial witnesses, expert witness identification and presentation, and multi-day trials. He has tried cases before juries in numerous District and Superior Courts throughout Massachusetts, as well as the United States Federal Court in Boston, and has achieved successful results for clients in all forms of alternative dispute resolution, including binding arbitration and mediation. Attorney Cavanaugh has also successfully represented plaintiffs in personal injury lawsuits, including; automobile accidents, slip and falls, and accidents at sea. His experience in both prosecuting and defending personal injury cases provides Attorney Cavanaugh with insight and experience from both sides of the personal injury fence, which he employs vigorously to obtain the best possible result for his clients. Attorney Cavanaugh has also represented business clients on corporate matters, and has successfully handled land use matters before state and local regulatory boards and commissions.
Attorney Cavanaugh has also briefed and argued cases before the United States Court of Appeals - First Circuit, Massachusetts Appeals Court and the Appellate Division of the Massachusetts District Court.
Attorney Cavanaugh attained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
